Baldwin Junior-Senior High School staff honored for outstanding service to students with special needs

Recognitions demonstrate district’s ongoing commitment to preparing all students for success

BALDWIN, Mich. — Two Baldwin Junior-Senior High School educators are being honored for their commitment to helping students with special needs succeed in the classroom and beyond. Special education teacher Brenda Buck and student support specialist Duane Roberts are recipients of the 2023 Make a Difference Award, awarded annually by the West Shore ESD Special Education Parent Advisory Committee.

Buck and Roberts were presented with their awards at an honorary dinner on June 2 at West Shore Community College. Buck has worked in the Baldwin district since 2015. Roberts is a 2008 Baldwin High School graduate and has worked full-time in the district in various roles since 2016.

The Make a Difference Award was started in 2016 to honor people, organizations and businesses going above and beyond to support students with special needs. The recognition is particularly meaningful because recipients are chosen by parents of students with developmental disabilities. The parents are nominated to the advisory committee by their local school district and then appointed by the West Shore ESD board.

“I would like to congratulate Brenda and Duane for dedicating their professional lives to helping students with unique challenges succeed before, during and after school,” said David Forrester, Baldwin Community Schools superintendent. “At Baldwin Community Schools, we recognize students face a variety of challenges, and Brenda and Duane continue to provide the critical support needed to help prepare our Panthers for bright futures.”
